How to Check a Used Phone Isn't Stolen or Blocked in Pakistan (2026)
Before you pay for a used phone in Pakistan, run these checks — IMEI on 8484, PTA/DIRBS status, iCloud/Google lock, and the FIR/blocklist. A 5-minute guide to avoid a blocked or stolen handset.

A used phone is a great deal in Pakistan — until you hand over cash for one that gets network-blocked a week later, or turns out to be stolen. Both are avoidable in about five minutes. Here's the exact checklist. Apni tasalli kar lein, phir paise dein.
1. Read the real IMEI — dial *#06#
Every phone has a unique 15-digit IMEI. Dial *#06# on the actual device and compare it to:
- the IMEI printed under the battery / on the box, and
- the IMEI in Settings → About.
If these don't match, stop — the device may be tampered with or rebuilt from parts.
2. Check PTA status — SMS 8484 or use the free tool
Send the 15-digit IMEI to 8484, or run the free IMEI check on NoSiappa for an instant PTA/DIRBS read. You're looking for one of:
- Compliant (PTA-approved) — works on local networks long-term. ✅
- Non-compliant (non-PTA) — can be blocked unless registered and duty is paid. ⚠️
- Blocked — already barred from networks. ❌ Don't buy.
New to this? Read IMEI & PTA explained and our PTA approval guide first.
3. Confirm it's signed out — no activation lock
A phone still linked to the seller's iCloud (Apple) or Google (Android) account is useless to you — it stays activation-locked after a reset.
- iPhone: Settings → tap the name at top → make sure it's signed out, and Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Erase shows no "Apple ID required".
- Android: Settings → Accounts → no Google account; do a factory reset and confirm it doesn't ask for the previous Google login.
If the seller "will reset it later" or won't sign out in front of you, treat it as locked.
4. Power it on and inspect
Never buy a phone you can't switch on. In person or on video, check:
- It boots to the home screen (not stuck on a logo or asking for a password).
- Calls, mobile data and Wi-Fi work.
- Screen, cameras, speakers, mic and all buttons function.
- Battery health (iPhone: Settings → Battery → Battery Health; Android: use a battery app) matches what's advertised.
5. Match the seller and the paperwork
- The seller's name should match a CNIC if you're meeting in person.
- Ask for the box and any purchase receipt. Missing paperwork isn't proof of theft, but it's a point to weigh.
- If anything feels rushed or "too cheap to be true," it usually is.
The safer way: let escrow do the checking
Doing all this with a stranger over cash is stressful — and you still carry the risk. On NoSiappa, every listing is from a CNIC-verified seller, the IMEI and PTA status are checked before the listing goes live and again before the seller is paid, and your money is held in escrow until you receive the phone and confirm it's as described. If it arrives blocked or not-as-described, you get a refund — not a runaround.
Aap ki payment tab tak mehfooz hai jab tak phone aap ke haath na aa jaye.
Frequently asked
- How do I know if a used phone is stolen in Pakistan?
- Dial *#06# to read the IMEI, then check it — SMS the 15-digit IMEI to 8484, run the free NoSiappa IMEI check, and confirm the phone is signed out of any iCloud or Google account. A device that's activation-locked or that the seller won't let you power on is the biggest red flag.
- Can a blocked IMEI be unblocked?
- Only the registered owner or PTA can resolve a block. If a phone is network-blocked because it's non-PTA, you can register it and pay the duty. If it's blocked because it was reported lost or stolen, you cannot legally clear it — walk away.
- Is it safe to buy a non-PTA phone?
- It can work on Wi-Fi and, for a grace window, on networks — but it may be blocked afterwards unless you register it and pay PTA duty. Non-PTA is only worth it if the discount covers the duty and you accept the risk. Buy through escrow so you're covered if it's blocked on arrival.
