If you're buying a used phone in Pakistan, PTA approval is the single most important thing to check after the price. Here's what it actually means in 2026 — without the jargon.
PTA-approved vs non-PTA
- PTA-approved (compliant): the phone is registered with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority and works on local networks long-term.
- Non-PTA (non-compliant): not registered. It works on Wi-Fi and, for a grace window, on networks — but can then be blocked unless you register it and pay the applicable duty.
A non-PTA phone is usually cheaper. That can be a genuine deal if you factor in the registration cost. It's only a problem when a seller hides it.
How to check — free, in seconds
- Get the IMEI: dial *#06# or check Settings → About phone.
- Run it through the free NoSiappa IMEI check, SMS it to 8484, or use dirbs.pta.gov.pk.
